Questions and Answers for having cigars and a cigar roller at your wedding reception
Thinking of having a cigar roller for your reception?
Cigar Catering® gives you a cigar knowledgeable event planner or "cigar planner". Your cigar planner has the unique combination of event planning and cigar savvy, a combination your wedding planner does not have and expertise that you will need.
Just about every wedding planner knows less about cigars than your cigar loving fiancée or family member however, wedding planners are placed in the decision-making role and continue to make the same mistakes that are absorbed by their unknowing client.
Some planners are even arrogant citing that they "..have been booking cigar rollers for years" and they may have in spite of their bad decisions such as wrong start times, using "wet" cigars and never addressing the thickness (ring gauge) and length which translates into smoking time per cigar. The amount of time it takes to smoke the cigars that are given to guests is extremely something extremely important to the reception and the Brides who don't want to turn their Big Day into a cigar festival. This is because wedding planners don't view cigars as important and treat the cigar roller feature as a conventional vendor, which is their biggest mistake.
When you are thinking of adding cigars and the cigar roller to your reception, you should have the cigar lover in your family contact us and we will have great suggestions considering the layout of your reception space, guest count and other variables.
We know the proper way to make the cigar feature a success with details your wedding planner simply does not know.
For a cigar roller feature at your Wedding reception, have a family member, friend take on the decision making and information gathering instead of your wedding planner, many planners would prefer this anyway. A reputable premium cigar brand that offers this feature will have consultants to help integrate cigar features into the reception in a way that will be successful on the Big Day.
Question: What kind of cigars should I get for a wedding?
ANSWER: The best cigars for weddings should be short and mild so robusto and Connecticut shade wrapper leaf is the best combination as they will be mild to medium-bodied and will burn for about 35 minutes.
Question: When should I bring in a cigar roller feature for a wedding?
ANSWER: The best time would be after dinner which is typically when the cigar culture lights up period so for weddings specifically, usually after the last piece of entertainment that you have because people will step outside once the cigar is lit.
Question: Why are just rolled cigars not to be smoked?
ANSWER: Because the wrapper leaf which is typically Connecticut Shade Broadleaf is wet when rolled on a cigar in any cigar makers process. Whether it's a factory in the Dominican Republic or an event in the United States cigars, when finally finished are put to the side to dry or cure for about 4 to 6 hours or left for the next day.
Question: How much does it cost for a cigar roller at a wedding?
ANSWER: The cost for a cigar roller feature is implied by the guest count which translates into time, quantity of cigars needed and other options like custom cigar bands. Each event is quoted individually as every reception has its own amount of guests and other unique circumstances (beach, boat, travel, time, etc). Cigar roller features last season were between $900 and $2200. Only two national cigar brands offer cigar rollers for events, Davidoff and CF Dominicana, Davidoff provides cigar rollers on occasion for their participating retailers (B to B) while "CF" provides cigar roller events direct for consumers (B to C) on a daily basis for public relations.
NOTE: Do not buy cigars made in the U.S. or have a cigar roller roller from a none-brand, there are no premium brands made in the U.S.
Question: What should I look for in a cigar roller for a wedding?
ANSWER: Some elementary items;
a) Make sure the company is branded so they are accountable, this avoids a "no show" scenario and other negative possibilities on the day of the event
b) Look for a cigar brand rather than a store. Beware when the cigar roller feature is not a primary business, these are typically cigar stores that try to make your wedding a "gig" which leaves you vulnerable as they are not accountable and no brand name is on the line for bad reviews. Cigar brands such as CF Dominicana's Cigar Catering® take events far more seriously as than brand name is attached to everything we offer our clients.
c) Pay attention to the cigars, this is often overlooked. The size, tobacco and brand separates cheap cigars from the premiums. Don't just ask "how many cigars do I get?" because you will be creating a terrible situation if dealing with a "gig worker" that will promise 100 or more cigars but all are skinny, 40 ring gauge with short filler tobacco or even worse, cheap tobacco - all because you never asked or had enough cigar knowledge to know. The worse thing you can do is bring cheap cigars to an upscale reception and it will be too late to reverse this mistake on the Big Night.
d) You need a cigar roller that is also and entertainer. You are giving an experience to all smokers and non-smoking guests and all of our cigar rollers look good, approachable, speaks English, is a person you would feel comfortable to have around your friends and family, is accountable to a company with a brand name, cigar knowledgeable and yes, this person also has to have specialized experience in rolling cigars for at least 6 years.
Question: How much should I tip a cigar roller at my wedding?
ANSWER: a flat tip of $50 to $150 or more for larger guest lists is typical and sufficient, remember that your cigar roller has a unique and sought after talent while being an art form not to be confused with a typical vendor or food and beverage staff.
Question: Why are wedding planners not recommended to plan for cigar rollers and cigar related features?
ANSWER: They can and often do plan however, there is a minority that are cigar knowledgeable. The vast majority do not know anything about cigars thus, decision making often flawed and that will effect negatively on your Big Day. It is recommended to have someone in the family who knows about cigars to help you and contact us directly.
You should also challenge those that claim to know about cigars. Some event planners that have worked with cigar rollers before may think they know what they are doing but often never address;
a)the quality of the tobacco or
b)size of the cigars which translates into burn time
c)make budget inflating decisions like having a variety of cigars which is wasteful to the Bride,
d) do not address the interaction of the roller with guests
e) does not even ask if the roller speaks English.
f) shops by price without addressing any of the above and/or seeks the lowest price so they can re-sell the service, which is unlawful as this includes tobacco which is a regulated product (alcohol, tobacco, firearms all need State permits to resell).
*IMPORTANT: Tobacco requires a license to retail.
*NOTICE TO EVENT PLANNERS: TOBACCO IS A REGULATED PRODUCT AND REQUIRES A LICENSE TO RETAIL.PLANNERS ACCEPTING PAYMENT TO PROVIDE CIGARS WITHOUT A LICENSE ARE DOING SO UNLAWFULLY.
